# MEDIFIT-PRIMA

A digital platform for securing the origin and authenticity of traditional Mediterranean foods along the supply chain.

## The project

Traditional Mediterranean foods such as honey and cheese live off their origin. Across long, branched supply chains that origin is hard to prove, and their authenticity becomes vulnerable.

MEDIFIT-PRIMA combined new analytical methods with digital traceability to make the origin and authenticity of such foods verifiable. Non-targeted methods such as NIR, Raman and NMR spectroscopy capture the characteristic fingerprint of a sample. A shared digital platform makes that analytical data available along the supply chain.

The approach was trialled on two chains, honey and cheese, from producer to retail. The results were presented at the closing conference at the University of Córdoba in 2023.

## The contribution from benelog

In the project we led the work package on data integration and were responsible for the technical backbone of the platform, the Distributed Data and Service Integration BackBone.

A honey or cheese chain involves many participants, from the producer through laboratories and processors to retail. Each of them holds their own data in their own systems. Analysis results, origin details and process information sit in different places, and a shared view of the chain only emerges when that data comes together without anyone having to give up sovereignty over it.

For that we developed and operated a cloud-based, distributed platform on the basis of EPCIS 2.0, the current GS1 standard for the event-based exchange of supply chain data. The data stayed in the systems of the respective partners. Through the platform it became retrievable for authorised participants along the chain, in a shared form that conforms to the standard. Everyone thus kept control over their own data, and origin and analysis data still became usable end to end.

To this platform we connected the specialist tools of the other partners, among them decision support systems, prediction models and the data exchange formats used in the project. Individual analyses and scattered information became a coherent picture of a supply chain, one that makes traceability and transparency possible. The same EPCIS 2.0 foundation also carries benelog's own implementation, OpenEPCIS.
